Edited volumes seldom call for contributions in two different fields. By combining language and literature, two closely related disciplines, this volume hopes to bring together chapters presenting original research that focuses on the intersection of language and literature and how the teaching and use of the former construes classroom and societal reality and spurs linguistic and literary creativity. While the volume is broad in scope, it particularly welcomes papers that demonstrate how language transcends boundaries in education and literary creation and seek to cogently highlight in their analytical approach the intricacies of linguistic transformation.

In a globalised world, language and literature are increasingly delocalised and disarticulated. The decentring of language and literature becomes manifest in diasporic literature that echoes the home from far afield or in local idealistic narratives that envisions a home divested of contextual realities. Language is at the centre of literary work as it seeks to position the writer in relation to his context, his readership, his epoch and the unfolding events of his time. But in a globalising world, context become denaturalised, the readership fluid and time transcended. In everyday use and in education, language is a differential between speakers and a symbolic tool for the shaping of pupils’ identity in the classroom and beyond.

It is anticipated that contributions for this volume will be drawn from studies that look at broad subthemes relating to various aspects of language and literature. The broad subthemes and areas of interest include but are not limited:

  • Literature: Endogenous and exogenous literatures
  • Literature: Literature and aesthetics
  • Literature: Literary theory and criticism
  • Language: English stylistics and usage
  • Language: Language teaching and the internet
  • Language: Theory and practice in English language teaching and learning
  • Language: Language and creativity
  • Language: Teaching English as a second or foreign language
  • Language: Language teaching in the context of teacher training and education
  • Language: English medium of instruction
  • Language: Translation and transliteration

Edited volume timeline:

  • Submission of abstracts and drafts: 30th of September 2017.
  • Review of abstracts and papers: 30th of November 2017.
  • Editing and submission of First Draft: 10th of January 2018.
  • Submission of Final Draft: 28th of February 2018.
  • Papers go to the publisher: 20th of March 2018.
  • Publication: April 2018.

For works to be considered, they should be original (i.e. not published before). Each abstract will be reviewed by the editors and papers peer-reviewed. Submitted papers should be in Word and saved as DOC or DOCX files. They should use footnotes and follow the Chicago Style of referencing. Use UK English spellings and punctuation except when quoting from a source that has used another English style.

Please submit a 200-word abstract, and your manuscript which should be between 7000 to 8000 words, and a 300-400-word biodata including your name, title, academic rank, your institutional affiliations, your qualifications, your research interests and publications as an email attachment with “Language and Literature edited volume” in the subject line to the editors at ngenevoix@yahoo.com or ngehandrew@yahoo.com.
